Financial assistance for affected banana farmers

The Banana Industry will be receiving funds from the Development Finance Cooperation to help propel it back into full production. Chief Agriculture Officer Eugene Waight says they received the news on Tuesday.
The destruction sustained at the banana plantations in South Stann Creek last week is estimated to have destroyed at least forty percent of the crop. The situation now is that many workers will face layoffs until the plantations are back in full swing. Waight adds that in the short term, the crop destruction will have an impact on GDP and foreign exchange.

The plantations were destroyed following at least three nights of heavy winds and rains starting on Monday of last week. The damages in the plantations range between twenty to eighty percent in losses.
